The ultimate Chinatown filming location map of Los Angeles Curbed LA

Modern wooden cabinetry, quartz countertops, and a substantial island compliment the expansive sliding glass window doors. Much like the living area, the kitchen is designed to promote sleek and seamless entertaining, with a minimal footprint. A massive plume of smoke quickly filled the sky, and two fire-fighting boats arrived on scene shooting water cannons at the structure at the end of the pier, where it broadens to support two structures and is called the hammerhead. A lone lifeguard vehicle posted up at the foot of pier, with a long fire hose, possibly two, running the length of the pier. The 450-square-foot dwelling on the 1300 block of East Main Street has a terrace that looks over the wash and a rooftop patio that sits next to a road bridge, separated only by a fence. It’s within walking distance of a Vietnamese restaurant and a hair salon but has no designated parking spot.

Bridge House in Los Angeles, California by Dan Brunn Architecture

The unusual location of the house and its comparatively modest $250,000 asking price drew national attention and hundreds of visitors when it hit the market a few weeks ago. Most of the visitors were looky-loos who wanted to get a peek at the small home someone built in 1949 into the side of a bridge owned by the city overlooking the Alhambra Wash. While most homeowners own the land under their house, the bridge is presumably public land, Lee said. The real estate agents are working to clear up such property issues with the U.S. Finally, evolving to Bridge House’s windows, a punctuating transition that delineates public space from private space.

Smoke still blew at the scene, but was no longer billowing, with the plume was vastly diminished. Small flames could be scene burning here and there, but the fire, in the structure at least, seemed to be largely knocked down. The firefighting boats and Coast Guard cutter remained on station, water cannons still blasting.

The design exemplifies Brunn’s signature minimalist aesthetic evident in dynamic spatial choreography of light and volume. A pivotal element of conception and construction of this home is its length, which allows for more Northern exposure, and since the space is only 20 feet wide, there is more natural light and less electric energy consumed. This Northern exposure aids in keeping the ecological footprint down, as there is no direct heat gain, and less need for artificial cooling, contributing to the net-zero goal. Furthermore, Bridge House has natural ventilation, including a series of skylights to ventilate corridors. All window applications are outfitted with custom shades, to block out even more sun exposure and keep the interior cool. On the exterior of the home, a series of photovoltaic cells on the roof allow for efficient and low impact energy sourcing.

“Chef Rachel saw smoke coming up from underneath the pier, behind the old Ruby’s building," Waite said. "Thankfully, everyone was evacuated safely. "This is really, really good news," Parsons said, "and like I said, we think we have forward progress stopped there. What that means is that the vast majority of the pier itself is in good, undamaged condition." Speaking at a news conference at around 5 p.m., Oceanside fire chief David Parsons said lifeguards were the first to report the fire and firefighters arrived five minutes later. He also stated that the main body of the fire had essentially been knocked down and that they were now focusing on keeping it under control, though the deck was still burning, which is where firefighters were concentrating their efforts. Luckily for the crews working on the boats, the surf was only 2-3 feet, easing their efforts.

Delph wrote in a search warrant affidavit which phone records showed Young had also been near the site of some of the robberies when they occurred. As he returned with the money, a man wearing a white jumpsuit stepped out of a white Lexus SUV holding a rifle, Detective Emily Delph of the LAPD Robbery-Homicide Division wrote in a search warrant affidavit. They grabbed bags of cash, checks and the victim’s weapon after taking it from the holster and fled in a white Honda Accord with $166,640, according to court records obtained by The Post. According to a search warrant affidavit, Davis is a member of the West Boulevard Crips, while Hobson is affiliated the Black P Stones.

Another suspect was later found dead in suspicious circumstances and a fourth was killed by police while fleeing a raid. FBI assistant director in charge of the Los Angeles office, Donald Alway, said the criminals would conduct surveillance on targeted locations using multiple vehicles and personnel in the lead up to the precision heists. The house hasn't been in use for a long time, and the next owner will have to renovate it.

The seeds of Bridge House were sown, however, when he visited the Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island. Though the Italian Renaissance-style mansion that was the Vanderbilt family’s summer retreat is a far cry from the modern profile of Bridge House, it sparked an idea for Brunn. The project uses unprecedented designs and systems, with an emphasis on economy and efficiency of design, accordingly the firm was eager to incorporate BONE Structure’s steel-construction modular system in Bridge House. Combining a classic post-and-beam structure with energy-efficient solutions, BONE Structure delivers a flexible, durable, and sustainable product, that affords expedited on-sight assembly. While not all of the proposed homes were built, many serve as a representation of the simplistic aesthetic elements of mid-century modern architecture, highlighted by clean lines and delineated spaces.

Approaching from the public side, you experience rays of light and warmth, overlooking a lush landscape. As you’ve just learned, there are plenty of unique places to dine in Southern California. Of course, you can find all sorts of waterfront restaurants in SoCal… or you can dine on the water.

Houses in the Alhambra, California, area have a median listing home price of $862,500, per data from real estate platform Realtor.com. The bridge house is the second-cheapest property to have transacted in the area so far this year. As of 10 p.m., crews were still battling active fire on the restaurant building and the pier and boats were still in the water, according to Blake Dorse, a division chief with the Oceanside Fire Department. However, officials believe the blaze will stay contained to the pier's end, in part because crews removed several planks of the pier and created a 5-foot trench going across the width of the pier to help stop the fire from spreading east. The result of Dan’s inspiration, paired with his unique background and signature style, is a pointed approach to development and a brilliant use of space.

The 450-square-foot apartment built in 1949 has a terrace that looks over a stream and a rooftop patio that sits next to a road bridge, separated only by a fence. It is priced at $250,000 — a steal considering the median sale price for an existing single-family house in Southern California is about $785,000. Dan Brunn, FAIA, Principal of Dan Brunn Architecture is designing a one-of-a kind “bridge house,” that will, literally, bridge over a stream. The 4,500-square-foot home will serve as a demonstration of innovative systems and forward-thinking processes.

Moments later, Rocco jumped from his third-floor apartment armed with an assault rifle. He momentarily dropped the gun while trying to get away and went to reach for it, according to surveillance footage. Investigators found further evidence which linked him to the heists and on March 21 this year, a SWAT team gathered at a Reseda Boulevard apartment building to serve a search and arrest warrant on the suspect.

Coast Guard cutter, but smoke continued to pour out all sides of the two-story building as well as beneath the pier, with only a few flames actually visible. Over at the coast, people had started to congregate to watch the conflagration, with some posing for selfies with the historic structure aflame behind them. Although smoke obscured the scene, the building at the end of the pier was burning furiously. The structure was once the site of the Ruby's Diner, which has stood empty since the business closed three years ago. As SkyRanger 7 arrived overhead, smoke was blowing onshore the entire length of the structure.

The average one-bedroom home in the Alhambra neighborhood costs about $350,000, so Lee decided to strategically price the apartment at just under $250,000 to generate interest — and because there’s no dedicated parking spot, Lee said. Our work to explore and shape our future approach to design education has only just begun, and students are partnering with us on this journey. Our 2-year graduate program is project-based and highly immersive. Students learn the skills needed to tackle big design challenges and build with purpose and intention. When students are building out a new concept –whether a product, service, or experience – they need to be able to nest the concept within the larger ecosystem that relates to it.

In order to rapidly experiment, you must be able to relax your mind and reach a mode of acceptance. This will eliminate the natural tendency to block ideas that seem off or unfeasible. Then, let your doing lead your thinking – and lead with your hands.

Symbols and motifs in Navajo weaving

navajo design

But Navajo weaving does deserve its reputation purely on merit. In that regard, it should be considered among other famous weaving traditions, from Persian rugs to Indian saris. Did you enjoy learning about the Navajo tribes through the lens of pottery? The Navajo people wared with the Spaniards in Mexico and the new American settlers in the territory of New Mexico. Eventually, the American military involved themselves in the fight.

Red, White & Bold: Masterworks of Navajo Design, 1840-1870

The woven cloths have a variety of rhythms of color and stripe, as well as a wide range of patterns. Indians refer to a stripe known as Moqui, an alternative (and archaic) term for banded clothing. Then painted it black and etched the beautiful wildlife landscape. The stark color contrast is similar to traditional methods used by Acoma Pueblo potters. The Pueblo’s are the Navajo’s neighbors and many of the pottery styles derive from Native American Pueblo Pottery. One of the Navajo traditional designs incorporates horsehair into the decoration of a pot.

Cultural influences

In its spiritual tradition, an eagle can fly up into the heavens delivering prayers to the heavens. The finish is similar to dark wood carvings with incised petroglyphs in black. These colors gave enormous energy to the early Navajo Chiefs Blankets. Later years saw the introduction of synthetic and vegetable dyes, and Germantown yarns that gave the Navjao weaver a whole new palette of creative colors. Not only was lightning powerful in the real world, it also carried great strength in Navajo weavings.

A brief history of the Navajo people

You can’t pick and choose what concepts to approve to serve as a basis for an argument that only seeks to confirm your own biases. Last year, I picked up a vintage overshirt/shirt jacket made of Navajo blanket cloth. It was a little faded with age, but that gave the whole garment a lovely patina. The patterns were very much like the ones you show, and the colours were bright and sunny, mostly browns, reds and golds with thick black lines separating the areas of colour. It’s a unique item, and I had not seen one of those before so I picked it up.

Navajo Gallup Throw Rug

However, originators are not necessarily owners or even can be owners especially of things like a “style of clothing” or a “hairstyle” among many other things. That is an entirely separate argument and has nothing to do with what all these arguments tend to initially argue for. Just because there is no physical manifestation of them does not mean they cannot be stolen. Ralph Lauren can use Indian art as a theme for their clothing or for anything else without apology. Meaningless and general terms like cultural appropriation are meant to obfuscate the issue and don’t explain anything. An alternative is to commission something from a modern weaver.

In addition, the high quality wools that are used only add to the cost. Additionally, Navajo rugs are authentic works of art by Navajo artists that are often purchased by collectors, which drives up the price. At Cameron Trading Post, we understand that a genuine Navajo rug is a one-of-a-kind piece that deserves a price that represents the quality, time, and care that went into its making. For instance, the Ganado rug is characterized by a red background with black, white, and gray designs encompassing one or two central diamonds, with geometric patterns woven into the edges of the rug. Two Gray Hills rugs have no colored dyes added, and are woven in white, brown, and black geometric patterns. Teec Nos Pos rug designs are vibrant, and have a wide border, complex geometric patterns, and a distinctive center design.

Tree Of Life

In a 2010 video segment by Voice of America News about the Toadlena Trading Post in Newcomb, New Mexico, and the weavers of the region, a weaver is quoted as saying, “whenever I run out of food or something, I always ask [the trading post owner] for money. With my rug,” she says, pointing to the weaving she is working on, “I’ll pay you back.” This is presented as a heartwarming symbiotic relationship. Shortly after the turn of the 19th century, however, red bayeta cloth purchased from the Spaniards was unraveled and the thread used to make Navajo textiles.

So today, we’re telling the story of Navajo pottery through the different and brilliant styles. One cannot separate Navajo weavings from the culture in which they were created. The variety of colors was limited in the early days to browns, blacks, whites, grays and a little indigo blue.

Navajo Two Grey Hills Rug

In Navajo mythology, lightning was used to make weaving tools but it could also help to define the power of an individual blanket or rug. The traditional weaver became very concerned about trapping their creative spirit within the weaving and not being able to weave in the future. To the traditional Navajo weaver, Spider Woman provided the framework to live and weave beautiful things – the essence of being Navajo. For the traditional Navajo family, the Holy People who created the Navajo were very powerful deities. J.T. Many thanks to Peter and Jed for their help with this article. I have one piece of handwoven linen hanging on our wall that was handed down from my wife’s Portuguese great-great-grandmother. There’s something particularly special, perhaps authentic, about clothing yourself in materials that you understand and have a connection with. Cloth has always been one of the aspects I’ve loved most about clothing - whether it’s hand-woven tweed from Harris or hand-patched Boro from Japan (shown above, at Sri Threads).

The tribes originating from the Athapaskans people came into contact with Spanish missionaries who gave them the name, Navajo. The name Navajo loosely translated to “farm fields in the valley” as the Navajo culture reflected its neighboring Puebloan people’s practice of agrarian life. In his featured work, he’s etched many symbols of the Navajo Indians with an eagle prominently feature. Eagles in the Navajo tradition hold eagles and eagle feathers as sacred.

The Hopi had limited their designs to striped patterns, but the Navajo introduced geometric shapes, diamonds, lozenges, and zig-zags. Symbolic representations of such phenomena as the elements, the seasons, and the times of day did not develop until about 1820. Medicine Man Gallery offers one of the best places to see the great weavings of traditional weavers.

Because of the history between the Navajo people and white settlers, the American commander in charge took a scorched earth approach, brutalizing the Navajo people. Go back to #1 from this list to learn more about the process the Navajo potter walked through to get the cool design. The black markings on this piece is where the horsehair was added before the ceramic clay pot was fired.

Less than 50 of these first-phase blankets, made until roughly 1865, survive. In 2002, an unsuspecting owner of a first-phase Navajo blanket found out at the Tucson ANTIQUES ROADSHOW that his blanket was worth between $350,000 and $500,000. However, one must try to avoid becoming so fixated on preservation that it derails engagement with the piece. While talking to Hoska, we were intrigued by the idea of weaving as a “grounding art” for the Navajo—a practice that roots them in place while providing a sense of structure and strength. Those drawn to Navajo weavings are often in search of just such grounding. But with the art of weaving in peril today, it is by no means assured that this unbroken tradition of tradecraft will survive for the collectors of tomorrow without careful stewardship and patronage.

Small “zigzags” in the four corners of a weaving could lend energy to the overall design. There exists no more powerful symbol in the Eyedazzler or Germantown period of Navajo weaving than the lightning bolts that streak across the face of the weaving and grab the eyes of the beholder. Therefore in some Navajo weavings, the cross will have an actual hole or sometimes a graphic hole in the cross. Prior to 1900, old Navajo wearing blankets often carried symbols or motifs that were attached to the teachings of Spider Woman. Jeffrey W. Thomas (BBA UC, '79; MBA NKU '83) founded Jeff Thomas Catering July 1985, which has supported many special events at CCM with delicious food.

Additional sustainable features include solar integration — reducing reliance on the traditional power grid — and plumbing systems that separate gray and black water — promoting efficient water use and reuse. These living infrastructure elements not only provide aesthetic value but also offer numerous environmental benefits, such as improving air quality, reducing stormwater runoff and enhancing insulation. By incorporating vegetation into building design, sustainable housing projects can harmonize with nature and contribute to the creation of more resilient and livable cities. From northern Arizona’s Diné (Navajo) people, comes Di’Orr Greenwood. Greenwood specializes in hand making bespoke wooden flutes, skateboard decks, and longboards. “Any art that comes from me is definitely ancestral based,” she said in a Navajo Times interview.

Analysis of Edgar Allan Poes The Fall of the House of Usher Literary Theory and Criticism

the fall of the house of usher

Because of the structure of the house, the characters cannot act or move freely in the house. Thus the house is assumed to be a monstrous character/structure in itself. It is a mastermind that controls the actions and fate of its residents.

Roderick Usher

Poe condenses these into a short story and plays around with them, locating new psychological depths within these features. In November 2023, Roderick Usher, the CEO of pharmaceutical company Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, loses all six of his children within two weeks. Auguste Dupin, an Assistant United States Attorney who dedicated his career to exposing Fortunato's corruption, to his childhood home, where he tells the true story of his family and unveils the Ushers' darkest secrets.

He believes the mansion is sentient and responsible, in part, for his deteriorating mental health and melancholy. Despite this admission, Usher remains in the mansion and composes art containing the Usher mansion or similar haunted mansions. His mental health deteriorates faster as he begins to hear Madeline's attempts to escape the underground vault she was buried in, and he eventually meets his death out of fear in a manner similar to the House of Usher's cracking and sinking. Roderick and Madeline are twins and the two share an incommunicable connection that critics conclude may be either incestuous or metaphysical,[7] as two individuals in an extra-sensory relationship embodying a single entity. To that end, Roderick's deteriorating condition speeds his own torment and eventual death.

How did Lenore, Madeline, and Roderick all die?

It’s not perfect – the order in which the Poe family meet their fates is a case of diminishing returns, as its most intriguing members are dispatched too quickly. Some of the CGI, particularly one scene involving bodies falling from the sky, is unintentionally funny. Problematically, Flanagan tends to conflate queerness with depravity and sexual fluidity is punished here with an unnerving flourish. But the show remembers to be actually scary, with truly inspired uses of chimps, mirrors and sprinkler systems. There’s no question that The Fall of the House of Usher ranks among Flanagan’s finest works.

After Roderick Usher claims that Madeline has died, the narrator helps Usher entomb Madeline in an underground vault despite noticing Madeline's flushed, lifelike appearance. As if in the superhuman energy of his utterance there had been found the potency of a spell — the huge antique pannels to which the speaker pointed, threw slowly back, upon the instant, their ponderous and ebony jaws. It was the work of the rushing gust — but then without those doors there did stand the lofty and enshrouded figure of the lady Madeline of Usher. There was blood upon her white robes, and the evidence of some bitter struggle upon every portion of her emaciated frame. For a moment she remained trembling and reeling to and fro upon the threshold — then, with a low moaning cry, fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final death-agonies, bore him to the floor a corpse, and a victim to the terrors he had anticipated. In the manner of my friend I was at once struck with an incoherence — an inconsistency; and I soon found this to arise from a series of feeble and futile struggles to overcome an habitual trepidancy — an excessive nervous agitation.

Roderick and Madeline are the only remaining members of the Usher family. Our books — the books which, for years, had formed no small portion of the mental existence of the invalid — were, as might be supposed, in strict keeping with this character of phantasm. One favorite volume was a small octavo edition of the Directorium Inquisitorium , by the Dominican Eymeric de Gironne; and there were passages in Pomponius Mela, about the old African Satyrs and Å“gipans, over which Usher would sit dreaming for hours. His chief delight, however, was found in the perusal of an exceedingly rare and curious book in quarto Gothic — the manual of a forgotten church — the Vigiliae Mortuorum secundum Chorum Ecclesiae Maguntinae. But evil things, in robes of sorrow,Assailed the monarch’s high estate;(Ah, let us mourn, for never morrowShall dawn upon him, desolate!)And, round about his home, the gloryThat blushed and bloomedIs but a dim-remembered storyOf the old time entombed.

Poe's Stories

“…an influence, whose supposititious force was conveyed in terms too shadowy here to be re-stated. The narrator, while entering the House of Usher, sees a small crack in the house, this crack not only refers to the crack in the house, but also the crack in the Usher family. There is a symbolic connection between the literal fissure and the metaphorical fissure. This small fissure shows disruption in the family, specifically between Roderick and Usher. Besides art mirroring or foreshadowing reality in the story, the other thing such as “reflection” and “doubling” is also going on in the story. When the story opens, we see that the narrator observes the inverted image of the house of Usher in the water pool that lies in front of the house.

thought on “A Summary and Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’”

The secret that is buried and then comes to light (represented by Madeline) is never revealed. The symbol which represents the secret – Madeline herself – is hidden away by Roderick, but that symbol returns, coming to light at the end of the story and (in good Gothic fashion) destroying the family for good. In a shocking development, Madeline breaks out of her coffin and enters the room, and Roderick confesses that he buried her alive. Madeline attacks her brother and kills both him and herself in the struggle, and the narrator flees the house. It is a stormy night, and as he leaves he sees the house fall down, collapsing into the lake which reflects the house’s image. Several days later, Roderick tells the narrator that Madeline has died, and they lay her to rest in a vault.

Characters

The mirror image in the tarn doubles the house, but upside down—an inversely symmetrical relationship that also characterizes the relationship between Roderick and Madeline. The narrator is mysteriously trapped by the lure of Roderick’s attraction, and he cannot escape until the house of Usher collapses completely. Characters cannot move and act freely in the house because of its structure, so it assumes a monstrous character of its own—the Gothic mastermind that controls the fate of its inhabitants.

I know not how it was — but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit. I say insufferable; for the feeling was unrelieved by any of that half-pleasurable, because poetic, sentiment, with which the mind usually receives even the sternest natural images of the desolate or terrible. There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart — an unredeemed dreariness of thought which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime. What was it — I paused to think — what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher? It was a mystery all insoluble; nor could I grapple with the shadowy fancies that crowded upon me as I pondered. I was forced to fall back upon the unsatisfactory conclusion, that while, beyond doubt, there are combinations of very simple natural objects which have the power of thus affecting us, still the analysis of this power lies among considerations beyond our depth.

The sources indicate that the owner of the house caught a sailor and his young wife in the house and entombed them in their place of trysting. In 1830, when the house was torn down, two bodies were found in the cellar cavity. The Martian Chronicles, a 1950 collection of stories by Ray Bradbury, contains a novella called "Usher II," a homage to Poe.

Poe's Stories The Fall of the House of Usher Summary & Analysis

the fall of the house of usher

The House of Usher is a 2006 American drama thriller film based on the 1839 Edgar Allan Poe short story "The Fall of the House of Usher". The film was directed by Hayley Cloake and written by Collin Chang. While Roderick clearly felt lots of remorse for the collateral damage that his successes had caused through the years—Verna explicitly showed him the deaths he was responsible for—Madeline felt absolutely none. She instead blamed "the consumers," the people whose lives are made worse by taking in the products that they (and others) make available.

The family has no enduring branches, so all genetic transmission has occurred incestuously within the domain of the house. The peasantry confuses the mansion with the family because the physical structure has effectively dictated the genetic patterns of the family. The narrator finds the inside of the house just as spooky as the outside. He makes his way through the long passages to the room where Roderick is waiting. He notes that Roderick is paler and less energetic than he once was.

A Summary and Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’

It was, especially, upon retiring to bed late in the night of the seventh or eighth day after the placing of the lady Madeline within the don-jon, that I experienced the full power of such feelings. Sleep came not near my couch—while the hours waned and waned away. I endeavoured to believe that much, if not all of what I felt, was due to the bewildering influence of the gloomy furniture of the room—of the dark and tattered draperies, which, tortured into motion by the breath of a rising tempest, swayed fitfully to and fro upon the walls, and rustled uneasily about the decorations of the bed. An irrepressible tremour gradually pervaded my frame; and, at length, there sat upon my very heart an incubus of utterly causeless alarm. Shaking this off with a gasp and a struggle, I uplifted myself upon the pillows, and, peering earnestly within the intense darkness of the chamber, hearkened—I know not why, except that an instinctive spirit prompted me—to certain low and indefinite sounds which came, through the pauses of the storm, at long intervals, I knew not whence. Overpowered by an intense sentiment of horror, unaccountable yet unendurable, I threw on my clothes with haste (for I felt that I should sleep no more during the night), and endeavoured to arouse myself from the pitiable condition into which I had fallen, by pacing rapidly to and fro through the apartment.

Cast and characters

Roderick contacted him when he was suffering from emotional and mental distress. He does not know much about the house of Usher and is the first outsider to visit the house in many years. The narrator tells him that such gas is natural; there is nothing uncommon in it. The narrator has visited the house because Roderick Usher has sent him a letter that sincerely asks him to give him company. In the letter, Roderick has mentioned that he has been physically and emotionally ill due to which the narrator has rushed to help his friend. Hezekiah Usher House could provide a source of inspiration for Poe’s story.

The final episode finally reveals what Roderick and Madeline did—and were running from—all those years ago, and how they first got involved with Verna in the first place. Who entereth herein, a conqueror hath bin;     Who slayeth the dragon, the shield he shall win. As the series draws to a close, Verna—whose name is an anagram of the titular bird in Poe's classic 1845 poem "The Raven"—is shown placing an item on each of the Usher's graves that represents their respective downfalls, closing the loop of her karmic retribution. Roderick then invited Madeline over to their childhood home, where he poisoned her drink and set to work mummifying her.

the fall of the house of usher

“Mad Trist” spookily crosses literary borders, as though Roderick’s obsession with these poems ushers their narratives into his own domain and brings them to life. The tale highlights the Gothic feature of the doppelganger, or character double, and portrays doubling in inanimate structures and literary forms. The narrator, for example, first witnesses the mansion as a reflection in the tarn, or shallow pool, that abuts the front of the house.

In a direct reference to Poe's most famous work (and how did we not see this coming with the name "LENORE"?!), A.I. Lenore only kept texting Roderick variations of, you guessed it, "Nevermore." “There is a lot about my job that I love, but there are moments like these that bring me no joy,” Verna tells her in her bedroom after a conversation that found Lenore telling Roderick that it wasn't too late to use Fortunato and the family's largesse for good. Keep in mind that Lenore still had this pureness of mind after seeing her mother burnt within in inch of her life by acid (thanks to Prospero's foolish orgy party) and then tortured by her father, who himself had just been brutally killed in a ridiculous freak accident.

Poe's Stories

Because of Madeline’s similarity to Roderick, she has been buried before she is actually dead, and this similarity is shown by the coffin that holds her identity. The short story opens with an unnamed narrator who approaches House of Usher on the dark, dull, and soundless day. The narrator noticed the diseased atmosphere and absorbed evil in the house from the murky pond and decaying trees around the house. He also observes that even though the house appears to be decaying, its structure is fairly solid. In front of the building, there is no small crack from the roof to the ground.

In the story “The Fall of the House of Usher,” strangely mingles the real with the fictional. The artistic creation of Roderick is directly connected to what happens in the house of Usher. He creates an underground tomb and then entombed Madeline in the tomb. He then prophecies about the destruction of the house, and the house is destroyed.

The bond between the brother and sister is inexplicable and intense. One can interpret that twin siblings are actually one person that is split into two. He illustrates himself as a mind to her body and suffers from the mental counterpart of his sister’s physical illness. The narrator also mentions that Roderick appears to be afraid of his own house. Madeline, the sister of Roderick, is taken with a mysterious illness that cannot be cured by the doctors. She is perhaps suffering from catalepsy in which one loses the control of his/her limbs.

When a door, at length, closed upon her, my glance sought instinctively and eagerly the countenance of the brother—but he had buried his face in his hands, and I could only perceive that a far more than ordinary wanness had overspread the emaciated fingers through which trickled many passionate tears. It was, he said, a constitutional and a family evil, and one for which he despaired to find a remedy—a mere nervous affection, he immediately added, which would undoubtedly soon pass off. I have said that the sole effect of my somewhat childish experiment—that of looking down within the tarn—had been to deepen the first singular impression.

To cheer up his friend, the narrator spends several days with him. He also reads stories to him; however, he is able to lift the spirit of Roderick. When Poe began writing short stories, the short story was not generally regarded as serious literature. Poe’s writing helped elevate the genre from a position of critical neglect to an art form.

One of the phantasmagoric conceptions of my friend, partaking not so rigidly of the spirit of abstraction, may be shadowed forth, although feebly, in words. A small picture presented the interior of an immensely long and rectangular vault or tunnel, with low walls, smooth, white, and without interruption or device. Certain accessory points of the design served well to convey the idea that this excavation lay at an exceeding depth below the surface of the earth. No outlet was observed in any portion of its vast extent, and no torch, or other artificial source of light was discernible; yet a flood of intense rays rolled throughout, and bathed the whole in a ghastly and inappropriate splendor. BY THE TIME you reach the final episode of The Fall of the House of Usher, the latest of Netflix's horror limited series from writer/director Mike Flanagan, there have been a lot of scares, a lot of violence, and a lot of lore.

Car design has come a long way since the inception of the automobile. Early vehicles were primarily functional, with little emphasis on aesthetics. As the automotive industry grew, so did the importance of design. The 1920s and 1930s saw the introduction of style as a selling point, with brands like Bugatti and Duesenberg leading the way.

That would give it the capacity to fire one of the deadliest anti-tank rounds in the Army’s inventory—the M900 Armored Piercing, Fin Stabilized, Discarding Sabot Tracer round. The M900 is a large, dart-like projectile tipped with depleted uranium that is fired from a 105mm gun. It is likely capable of penetrating, for example, the armor of current Russian tanks and all other Russian armored vehicles. Instead, the M10 is more like the assault gun concept pioneered by the German Army in World War II. Assault guns are armored vehicles that lend their main gun firepower to the infantry to support them in attack and defense, and use their mobility to rush from one trouble spot to another. In an attack, the BCV would use its 105mm main gun to destroy enemy bunkers, machine gun nests, fortifications, and other defenses that could hold up the advance of foot-bound infantry.

Fusion 360 offers a variety of modeling techniques you can use for car design based on your preference. For example, Grant Holmberg-Baugher has numerous videos showing how to model cars in Fusion 360 with T-splines, and you can also use techniques like loft and boolean modeling for controlling every surface of your model. Sometimes a nude base with gold detailing is enough to create a simple and elegant abstract look. There's no denying that abstract nails are on the rise on Instagram. The best part about these less-conventional nail looks is that they're easier for everyone to achieve, as they don't follow a single set rule in regards to the trend.

Then, opt for a clear base on the rest of your nails, and finish the look by adding blue abstract squiggles on your nude nails. These two nail-art trends tap into 2024’s fascination with all things coquette-ish and doll-like. The trend of blush nails originated in South Korea, and it’s a look nail artist Jin Soon Choi is seeing bubble up again.
